situation. you tell me if john kerry's right for the job. is he right for the job? >> yes. >> is chuck hagel right for the job? >> sure. >> should we discriminate against them? because they are right for the job. >> so you're suggesting that there are no women as qualified as men for these positions. >> i think the moment has to be right on a number of levels. and i think they're good choices. >> a woman as treasury secretary. there's an opening there. there's an opening at treasury, right? >> joe? >> yes, katty. >> is that photograph that's alongside "the new york times" article yesterday disappointing? of course it's disappointing. to see a roomful of men with the president. it would be hard to say that that wasn't the case, right? but i think if you look at what the president has done in terms of the supreme court and advancing to women there, that is incredibly important. >> hear, hear. >> in terms of -- >> why are you saying that -- >> -- for a long time. i would say as a woman, that's more important to me having three women on the supreme court. >> there you go. >> than perhaps having

kerry for secretary of state comes chuck hagel for defense secretary, and of course john brennan as the cia director earlier this week. coming up, we will hear from the current defense secretary of leon panetta and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff martin dempsey. we will have live coverage here on c-span. coming up, we will have a look at the cost of college education and student loans and whether college that could be the next bauble that might affect the economy. we will be joined by marian wang and josh michel. that is live at 8:00 p.m. eastern here on c-span. the national debt may be the single biggest threat to the national future according to thomas donahue. this is 35 minutes. >> good morning. happy new year, everybody. i am the president of the u.s. chamber of commerce, and we are pleased that you could join us for the annual state of american business address. before we welcome him to the stage, i would like to say a brief word about my friend and our leader tom donohue. looking back of the past year, the chamber has had victories and a few disappointments durin

lew like there is to, say, chuck hagel for the defense secretary's job. so i think you'd have to say he'll be confirmed. >> all right. gloria, stand by. what does the treasury department actually do? it certainly collects taxes, duties, money that's paid to the united states as well as paying u.s. bills. it manufactures u.s. coins and currency, it manages government accounts and the public debt. it supervises national banks and thrift institutions. it advises on domestic and international financial trade and tax policy and investigates and prosecutes tax evaders, counterfeiters, and forgers. if he's confirmed as treasury secretary, jack lew faces several challenges right off the bat. want to bring in our chief business correspondent, ali velshi. let's start with one of the most pressing issues -- raising the nation's debt ceiling. that's going to be a huge debate. >> yeah. >> and lew if confirmed will have a major role in that. >> yeah. and i agree with gloria. i don't think there's going to be a big confirmation battle. you have to really not like the treasury secretary to not confi

to actually make it pass. tony. >> senator hagel's likely if he's confirmed to be secretary of defense by march 1st. what kind of leadership challenges does this pose to him? what -- can he do anything to ameliorate it or send out signals -- if he says this is going to be his first-day challenge, what not advice to him, but where does he control the debate at all or the actual consequences? >> yeah. i don't know that there's a lot that the sec def -- whoever it is at that time -- can really do other than try to be, you know, straightforward and open with the congress and the american people about what the real impacts are going to be. not the hyperbole, not just talking points, but coming out with what the real impacts are going to be and let people know and make an informed decision about what's best for the country. i think that's about the best that any secretary of defense could do in this situation. and i actually want to go on. my last slide here before we close, i know we're getting close to 11:00, is, you know, you put all this together, and what we have coming here in the next

sides of the aisle will agree to insufficient numbers to make it pass. >> senator hagel is likely to march 1.med aon can he do anything? [indiscernible] >> i do not know that are is a lot that whoever it is at that time can really do. other than try to be straightforward and open with congress and the american people about what the real impacts would be and not just talking points, but coming out with what the impacts would be. let the people make an informed decision on what is best for the country. that is about the best that any defense can do in any situation. i want to go on. my last slide before we close is to put all of this together. in the next few months, i think it is madness. we're looking at late february and early march, the treasury says that they will be running out of options to avoid reaching the debt ceiling. if congress does nothing to increase the debt ceiling by then, we could be looking at a government default. even if it is not a default on our debt and the treasury says they will prioritize interest on payments, we're still looking at at a default under go
